Dual Desktop Illuminator with Gas to Electricy Converter

Getting started. Here is the Visio design that I threw together to approximate the finished piece. I found it useful when trying to explain what it was I was building. Even after seeing the picture I got a number of "are you nuts" looks.

Starting to Fashion Pieces of the Lamp and Converter

The Cherry wood box with the two lamp bases and the copper tank positioned approximately where it will be in the finished product. The voltmeter will measure the voltage going to the lamps. Discarded Candle holders on the bench may be turned down to reduce the flare and used on top of the lamp glass to hold the lamps down.

With Lamp Glass

The lamp holders are up-side-down brass candle stick holders. The candle cups were removed and a brass ring was added at the base to provide a stable mounting.
|
Completing the Lamp Sections

Added the sockets for the 1800's bulbs and found brass shades to decorate the top of the glass cylinders. Also note the solid brass half ball on top of the copper tank. This will be fun to machine down to the right size.

The Converter

The machined half ball sits atop the copper tank and was soldered together. 1/4-20 brass nuts were soldered to the base inside the tank to mount the assembly to the base. Mock insulators were installed and the wire going to the lamp bases were shielded with braid to further the decorative effect of the power cable. A mock gass source pipe was added from the tank to the base box. This routes the lamp power wiring to the inside of the box. Note the Wood Cockatoo. Another half finished project. He is monitoring the lamp progress.

More Converter

Note the brass band around the top of the tank. This was attched with 17) 0-80 brass bolts. The effect is to simulate the bands that re-enforce the tank.
